Martin Crawford helps a hunted man to escape his pursuers, and later the man he assisted comes to his house by chance, seeking shelter. His mother recognizes the man as Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, and offers her two sons, Martin and his older brother Sean to fight in his army in the war for the freedom of Scotland against the English. While Sean enjoys fighting, Martin has no taste for such things, and the king chooses Martin to be his page. Martin and his brother quickly come to admire their king as the others in the army admire him when the king wins a battle against a larger force.

The King’s Swift Rider, being about a war in the 14th century, does well in adding a story to historical events. As a warning, there is some bad language, but the story is very good and has some unexpected twists. Very enjoyable, and highly recommended.

Jack wakes up one morning and decides that he wants a pancake for breakfast. His mother is busy so Jack has to make the pancake himself while his mother tells him what he needs to do.

I like this book because Jack has to go through the processes used to make the ingredients used in his pancake instead of having all the ingredients in the form they are needed in.

Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, Mary Anne, do various digging jobs. The more people watching them, the faster and better they work. Then newer shovels that are not steam powered are invented and no one wants to hire steam shovels anymore. One day, Mike Mulligan sees in the newspaper that the town of Popperville is building a new town hall and Mike Mulligan decides that he will dig the cellar for the new town hall.

This is a great book for young children who like machines and it also tells a very good story.

Henry Ware and his friend Paul Cotter from Wareville are delivering some gunpowder to a settlement called Marlowe. On the way, Paul is captured by Shawnee Indians and then rescued by Henry. Henry and Paul are followed by the Shawnee Indians to an abandoned house. They escape from the Indians and meet up with some of their friends.

This book is one of the better ones of Joseph Altsheler’s books. The Forest Runners moves quickly for most of the book.

This book starts at the beginning of the Civil War. Harry Kenton is sent by his father, a prominent person in Kentucky, to tell the South Carolina leaders that Kentucky will follow it out of the Union. When Harry Kenton arrives in South Carolina, he delivers his message and soon after joins the Southern army.

Out of Altsheler’s books that I’ve read, this is the one I’ve liked the least. It’s a little slow moving throughout the book. One interesting thing is that The Guns of Bull Run focuses on what is happening in the South.

A wizard, who lived in a time in which there were no colors except black, white, and gray, invents the color blue. The rest of the people see him painting his house and want some blue. The wizard gives them his invention and they paint everything blue, which after a while, makes everyone sad. The wizard then invents yellow and red in turn, each having a different effect on everyone.

The Great Blueness, just like all of Arnold Lobel’s books that I’ve read, has a hint of silliness. Don’t forget to look at the pictures because a lot of the silliness is in the pictures.
