Philadelphia lives with her father in a restricted compound for the religious, held there by the United, the world power. When her father is chosen to go to Mars for a secret mission and Philadelphia is forced to accompany him, she stumbles on secrets that she wasn’t ever supposed to find out. Secrets that could destroy everything she’s ever known if she’s not careful.

As the debut novel of author Aubrey Hansen, Red Rain has a lot going for it. It’s a fast-paced, well-written book with all the trappings that go with that label. Interesting characters, intriguing mysteries, plot twists—it’s all here. My only complaint, and it’s minor, is that there was room for some more exploration of the underlying themes to really make parts of the narrative keep you awake at night pondering the impossible choices. But as an exciting afternoon read, Red Rain shines brilliantly. More, please!

A group of archeologists makes an astounding discovery when they unearth a pyramid with writings inside in a language nobody has ever seen before. Rebecca (from Logic’s End) and her husband Jeffery are among the team of scientists set to study the pyramid. But when they discover it has strange powers, and then accidentally turn it on during an emergency, the team is in for a wild ride through time and space that will challenge what they believe about the origin of civilizations.

The job of a reviewer is a difficult one. I often enjoy a book’s plot and characters, while at the same time I am put off by the writing style. Such is the case with Pyramid of the Ancients. Although I found the story itself to be excellent, fast-paced, and well thought out, I had problems with the writing style that refused to pick a point-of-view character and stay there. Also, a couple of chapters of unmasked exposition had me wishing that the characters would quit talking so the story could start again. That aside, this one has a great story, and the final book in the Origins Trilogy ought to be a humdinger.

NASA has discovered a planet that is so similar to Earth that it is believed to be capable of supporting life. Rebecca, an evolutionist scientist who helped make the discovery, is chosen to join a mission to visit the planet. But upon arrival, Rebecca is separated from her team and kidnapped by a group of aliens who live only for themselves and the furthering of evolution. Will she be able rejoin her team and make it back to Earth?

Logic’s End is a well-told story that is certainly a page-turner. Keith Robinson is to be commended for that. That said, the goal of the book appears to be to prove that creation is true and evolution is false. Unfortunately, because of the way the story, characters, and facts are presented, Logic’s End succeeds only in preaching to the choir. If you’re looking for a book to convince someone that evolution is false, this is likely not a good choice. But to strengthen your own belief, or even to plant a seed in an unbeliever’s life, Logic’s End is an excellent read.

Wednesday dawns and Author Penhaligon is facing his next task: finding and claiming the next part of the Will and the Third Key. But this isn’t any easier than Monday and Tuesday were. Lady Wednesday herself, rumor has it, has been transformed into a monstrous, all-devouring whale. And the terrible and powerful pirate-sorceror Feverfew is set on capturing and killing Arthur. Falling in with the unusual crew of the salvaging ship The Moth, Arthur faces high adventure on the Border Sea, risking much to complete his quest. Lives are at stake.

Drowned Wednesday is fairly consistent with the first two books of the series, while still keeping the adventures fresh and unique. A good blend of humor and peril, with both old characters and new. I can’t say that it’s an exceptionally remarkable story, but I found it imaginative and enjoyable nonetheless, and I intend to follow it up promptly with the fourth book, Sir Thursday.

Due to events that can only be understood by reading the first two books, Nathan Shepherd must travel to the dream world to find his father. Preventing Interfinity, a merging of the three Earths, is his goal. But events take a turn for the worst as previously-safe Earth Red heads back into a collision course. Nathan must decide between sacrificing the remaining supplicants (the strange powers behind dimensional mirror travel), playing the giant violin that previously almost killed him, or a third option which may be the most dangerous of all.

Hold onto your hat as you read this final installment! Themes of sacrifice, courage, and love are demonstrated over and over before your eyes as the story races to its conclusion. We finally learn the answers to most of the mysteries from the previous books. The ending is satisfying, yet things feel a bit rushed as the final chapter hurtles to a close. I was more emotionally involved in the previous two books than I was in Nightmare’s Edge, but with so much ground to cover it’s no wonder.

Despite all hinderances, Mictar’s scheme is rolling forward and Interfinity approaches—bringing with it destruction. Nathan and Kelly must renew their efforts to stop the evil stalker, but there is already so much to repair, and Nathan’s parents still need rescuing. With the help of their friends, they travel between the dimensions to put a complex plan into action. Mysteries abound, new pieces of the puzzle come into play, and Nathan is faced with increasingly difficult choices.

The setup of the multiple dimensions and multiple characters in the first book, Beyond the Reflection’s Edge, serves to keep you oriented during Eternity’s Edge, but you’ll still need to keep your wits about you to stay on top of the twists and turns of this roller-coaster of a book. It really is incredible, and I enjoyed just as much—if not more—than I did the trilogy’s starter. I love the way music continues to tie into the story, and some of the new explored places are fascinating. But the characters are what really keep me reading. Can’t wait for the conclusion to be found in upcoming Nightmare’s Edge!

As war looms in Second Eden, Billy and Elam try to prepare their small army for battle. They desperately need the help of Makaidos, king of the dragons. Before they can call him, two sinister figures arrive to interfere with Elam’s plans, but are they really as bad as they seem?

Meanwhile, Bonnie, Sapphira, Billy’s mother, and Gabriel attempt to open a portal to Second Eden. When enemies attack, causing them to separate, things get even more complicated as Bonnie and Sapphira end up in a strange new dimension. Add to that mix a few unfulfilled prophecies that have been floating around since Raising Dragons, and the stage is set for the final chapter of Oracles of Fire.

It is always difficult to write a review of the final book in a series that you have thoroughly enjoyed. You know it’s the end, and that makes you sad, but you also know that everything will finally be put right. Bryan Davis effectively ties up all the loose ends remaining from both Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire, while still (delightfully) leaving a couple small things hanging. Nothing has disappeared from his usual style which convicts as often as it captivates. Themes of unending love and selfless sacrifice abound, often bringing tears to the eyes of the reader. Although I was sad to see the story end, the final chapter left me grinning from ear to ear.

If a sin is committed in Second Eden, a way will open for evil to get in. Oracle of Fire Acacia, son of Shem Elam, and former underworld slave Paili all arrive in Second Eden to stop such a crisis. Meanwhile, Ashley, Walter, and dragon Thigocia have all come to Second Eden as well. All of them realize how crucial the success of their mission is to the survival of the universe. But will they recognize the threat before it is too late?

At the same time, Billy Bannister tries to find out why his friend Bonnie and her mother have both taken off for fear of dragon slayers. It will take a trans-dimensional journey and many old friends to unravel the mystery that ultimately will bring them back to an ancient enemy.

I’m always left with a sense of just having gotten off a roller coaster when I finish these books. All of the characters have something to learn, something to accomplish, and are all important to the story. This may be overwhelmingly complicated, but that’s what makes this so good. It’s a depth of story that I don’t usually see in fantasy. Although Last of the Nephilim is a little bit slower than Bryan Davis’ other books that I have read, it is still well worth reading. I’m looking forward to the hair-raising conclusion that must be coming in Bones of Makaidos.

Back in present day, Enoch’s Ghost continues from where the Dragons in Our Midst series left off. Ashley, Walter, Karen, and Thigocia are beginning their search for Gabriel and Makaidos. But it’s not long before a sinister plot is uncovered—Mardon is taking steps to merge Hades, Earth, and Heaven. Even with help from Sapphira Adi, Walter, Ashley, and the others are up against great odds. Multiple storylines grow and build, leading to a powerful climax across three dimensions.

I did enjoy this book, but I must admit that it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Having persevered through the enormous Eye of the Oracle (and consequently feeling like I’d run my brain through a fruit pulper!) I was ready to get back to a present-day setting, with maybe a simpler plot and something I could actually wrap my mind around without strain. “A search for missing family members, with adventures along the way,” I told myself, settling in to read. Well, not quite. A lot of the history and technology from Eye of the Oracle ties into Enoch’s Ghost, and the results are far from simple. All told, it’s masterfully put together, and I’ll certainly be reading the final two books. I’m just finding the Oracles of Fire series to be a little too over the top for me to really enjoy as much.

When his spy father and musical mother are found dead and he has to go into a witness protection program, Nathan Shepherd is left with only a few clues about what happened to his parents. A mysterious mirror in a strange box left him in his father’s will leads Nathan to the conclusion that his parents are really alive. But with this realization comes the discovery of some very weird parallel universes (yes, I did say universes), dragging Nathan and his new friend/sister Kelly into a mystery which only becomes more complicated as they unravel it.

Because of the complexities of the plot, you’ll have to stay focused to finish Beyond the Reflection’s Edge. It really is so complicated, intriguing, and fast-paced that I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, even when I wasn’t reading it. The characters come across as very real, and Nathan especially inspired me in a positive way. This is definitely a new entry on my favorites list, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the next one!
