Little House Series
One series that we have really enjoyed is the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It provides an amazing look at that time period, while still capturing the reader’s attention with well-paced plot, and they make great read-alouds.

Need something to read? We’re here to help! On Incredibooks, we’ve reviewed hundreds of good books. We’ve tried to make it simple to find what you want. Just click one of the category links on the right, pick from the choices below, or just click for a random book review.
L. B. Graham
We have enjoyed the Binding of the Blade series by L. B. Graham very much. You should be forewarned, though, that these books tend to end on cliffhangers. L. B. Graham currently lives in Maryland, and he’s still writing. We look forward to seeing more of his books in the future.
Donita K. Paul
We have really enjoyed the DragonKeeper series by Donita K. Paul. And with good reason! Mrs. Paul was a teacher before she wrote DragonKeeper, which makes her books even better. For more about both DragonKeeper and Mrs. Paul, head over to her website.
Meindert DeJong
Meindert DeJong (pronounced Dee-Yong) was born in Holland in 1906. He emigrated to Michigan with his family during WWI. In WWII, DeJong was drafted as a historian and sent to China.
Many of DeJong’s books are set in Holland or America. The House of Sixty Fathers is set in China and is based on DeJong’s experiences there. Meindert lived to write twenty-seven books before he died in 1991.
Jim Kjelgaard
Jim Kjelgaard (1910-1959) loved the wilderness and consequently set his books there. A lot of his stories were written about boy or man and a dog. The books have exciting plots and the characters have real-life goals. Jim Kjelgaard also wrote historical fiction. (Rebel Siege is one.) Sadly, most of these books are out of print and you may have to go through inter-library loans to get them.
Anne of Green Gables series
Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the famous Anne of Green Gables was born on Prince Edward Island, November 30th, 1874.
You can click here to buy the complete Anne of Green Gables set from Amazon.
We have also enjoyed the Emily of New Moon series, by the same author.
Mitford Series
The Mitford Series by Jan Karon is definitely an addicting series. Be forewarned! These are not good if you want to read them a snippet at a time. Trust us on this one. The depth of the plot and complexity of the many easily-believable characters makes the Mitford series special. We enjoy them very much.
With Light From Heaven completing the Mitford series, Jan Karon is continuing to write. The new Father Tim novels have begun, starting with Home to Holly Springs.
The Black Stallion Series
Walter Farley was born on the 26th of June, 1915, and The Black Stallion, his first book, was an instant hit when it appeared in 1941. He continued writing books about the black stallion and other horses, and he died shortly before the publication of The Young Black Stallion, which he wrote with his son, Steven Farley.
If you’re looking for very good books about horses, the Marguerite Henry books are excellent. The Black Stallion series is an enjoyable series, and they’re very adventurous and heart-pounding at times, but most of the Marguerite Henry books are based off of historical facts, and can be more educational. However, if you love horses, and are trying to find books about them anywhere possible, then we recommend the Black Stallion series very highly.
Little House Series
One series that we have really enjoyed is the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It provides an amazing look at that time period, while still capturing the reader’s attention with well-paced plot, and they make great read-alouds.
Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott was born in 1832. Although her books aren’t tales of high adventure and daring escapades, they are books that you will find yourself coming back to again and again and we recommend them highly. A good biography of L. M. Alcott is Invincible Louisa, written by Cornelia Meigs.
Picture Books
Books for young children have captured our hearts, in one way or another. Even though we’ve moved on to longer, more in depth books, we still take time to read our favorite picture books. Why not? They’re fun, and have great stories. Anyway, that’s why we love them. Here’s the picture book reviews on Incredibooks, so you can join us in loving our childhood favorites.
Chester Cricket Books
George Selden was born in Connecticut and he first had the idea to write The Cricket in Times Square when he was coming home on the subway one night and heard a cricket chirping amid all the hustle and bustle. The Cricket in Times Square became so popular, that George Selden was requested to write more. Tucker’s Countryside soon appeared and was followed by the entire Chester Cricket and His Friends series.
Jules Verne
Jules Verne was born on February 8th, 1828 in Nantes, France. When he was 11 years old, he ran away to sea where he was soon caught and sent home in disgrace. He vowed that from then on, he would travel in his imagination only. He certainly fulfilled his vow by writing many wonderful science-fiction/adventure books before he died on March 24, 1905.
This is by no means a complete list. We have discovered that Jules Verne wrote over 40 novels about imaginary scientific discoveries and innovations.
J. R. R. Tolkien
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (no wonder he stuck to J. R. R.), was a Professor at Oxford. He was part of a group of authors who met twice a week to discuss their books. A few of them, including Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, decided to start a project of writing books with Biblical parallels in them, while remaining fantasy stories. Thus was born The Lord of the Rings. Originally one volume, Tolkien split the book into a trilogy when publishers told him it was too long (they should read Moby Dick). Recently, The Lord of the Rings was made into an epic motion picture, which follows the books rather well, with a few exceptions of omissions and side plots not in the books. J. R. R. Tolkien also wrote several other less famous books. He died in 1973.
Marguerite Henry
Marguerite Henry was born in Wisconsin on April 13th, 1902. By the time she was seven, she had developed a serious childhood illness that kept her confined indoors where she soon discovered the joy of reading. She wrote more than 20 books, mostly about animals, before she died on November 26th, 1997.
You can buy the Marguerite Henry’s Horseshoe Library boxed set from Amazon which includes:
- Misty of Chincoteague
- Sea Star, Orphan of Chincoteague
- Stormy, Misty’s foal.
Authors and Series
We have many favorite authors and series. These pages have a list of the books an author wrote, or of all the books in a series. The ones about authors also contain a brief history of the author.
FAQ
What is Incredibooks supposed to be?
We like to think of ourselves as a constantly growing book review site. You can search for reviews and browse by category, and comment on the reviews, giving Incredibooks a blog-like feel. Occasionally, we will blog about new releases and other book related topics. Also, if you want to join the discussion, you can join the Incredibooks Forum. We generally try to add at least one new review per week.
How am I supposed to use Incredibooks?
A detailed look at Incredibooks features and how to use the reviews can be found at How to use Incredibooks.
Why do you link to Amazon?
There are links to Amazon on all the reviews, right above the book picture. Clicking on them will take you directly to the book on Amazon, and if you buy it, we receive a percentage of the sale. This does not cost you any extra, and it will help pay for our Web space.
What ages do you recommend for these books?
Our four age categories are All Ages, Younger Readers, Older Readers and Advanced Readers. Books rated All Ages are suitable for everybody. Younger Readers refers to readers who are under thirteen years old. Older Readers are readers over thirteen years old. Advanced Readers are 15 and up. We have made it easy to tell at a glance who the book is suitable for. As you scroll through a page of reviews, you will notice icons on the right-hand side of the screen. They all say “Ages” at the top, and underneath is a number.
What books are good to read out loud?
We’ve marked several books as being Good Read Aloud books. These books are great stories to enjoy together.
How does your rating system work?
The star rating system is on a scale of one to five, with one being “Read this book if you need something to do” and five being “Go out and buy this book right now!”
Why is there a little icon next to some posts?
When you see this icon, it means that we’ve given this book our highest rating. Five stars, top on the list, everybody should read it. If you don’t like anything but the best, these are for you. You can browse all Incredibooks by clicking here.
L. Frank Baum
Most people know The Wizard of Oz through the very famous movie, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. However, not very many people know that, while the movie is great (it’s one of our favorites), the book is quite good, too. The movie changes several details, such as the ruby slippers, which are silver in the book. Also, there are fourteen books about Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, the royal historian of Oz.
Books about Trot and Cap’n Bill outside of Oz:
Baum also wrote under several pseudonyms, which include Edith Van Dyne, Schuyler Staunton, John Estes Cooke, Suzanne Metcald, Laura Bancroft, Floyd Akens, and Capt. Hugh Fitzgerald.
Book Tips
How to find out of print books:
If you read a lot, you’ll probably notice that some authors have a few books that are out of print. Some of our favorites are out of print. Here’s how to find those hidden gems:
- Try looking at the library.
- Ask your librarian about Inter-Library Loan Requests if your library doesn’t have a book. If the book exists, they can find it for you.
- Look on BookSaleFinder.com for library book sales.
- Check for used books on Amazon.com
- Look on Alibris, Reading Well and Book Finder
How to get bad smells out of books:
Well, it’s inevitable that if you buy used books, sooner or later, you will get one that smells bad. Here’s how to remove the stink:
Put the book in a bin, and then add one of the following:
- Fabric Softener Sheets
- Kitty Litter
- Charcoal Aquarium Filters
- Newspaper
Leave the book for a day or two, and then smell it. If it still smells bad, repeat the process.
Where to store your books:
On the bookshelves, of course! Where else would you put your books?! Seriously, do not store your books in a garage or basement. Your books will quickly become mildewed and will smell bad. Also, don’t cram the books on the shelf. A good rule of thumb is if more books come off the shelf when you pull one off, you’re squishing the books a little too tight.

Lloyd Alexander
An author that we have enjoyed is Lloyd Alexander. He writes great books of fantasy and adventure. The following books are the ones of his that we have read. His Chronicles of Prydain are very good, and among our favorites.
Read the Prydain reviews!
We must mention that Disney made an animated version of The Black Cauldron, which is a highly changed version of The Book of Three and The Black Cauldron put together into one movie. None of us have seen it, but from the description on Amazon, it seems to be pretty far from the book.
Lloyd Alexander has also written the Vesper Holly series, which is about a teenage girl who has adventures in different countries around the world.
Other good books that we have read by Lloyd Alexander include:
Lloyd Alexander lived in Pennsylvania with his wife and cats until his death in 2007.
Freddy the Pig Series
Back before World War II, Walter R. Brooks was bored one day and wrote Freddy Goes to Florida. Twenty-six wonderful books later, Walter Brooks died. All his books went out of print, but they were not forgotten. Coming back to the shelves through Overlook Press, Freddy the Pig is still a character to be well loved. These are some of our favorite books, but many are still not in print. You may have to juggle your way through inter-library loans to read the whole series.
To learn more about Freddy and his friends, visit The Official Freddy Website.
Some of our favorite characters from the Freddy series are:
- Jinx the Cat
- Mr. Boomschmidt
- The Sheriff
- Red Mike
- Mrs. Peppercorn
- Looey
- Leo the Lion
- Charles the Rooster
- The Horrible Ten
- Jerry the Rhino
- Samuel Jackson the Mole
- Mrs. Wiggins
- And of course, Freddy the Pig
Some of our favorite disguises that Freddy wears include:
- The Irish Woman
- Snake Peters
- Mr. Arquebus
- Lorna Del Pardo the Spanish lady
- Peppercorn Talcum
Anybody with a sense of humor and a love for good books should read Freddy!
Redwall Series
One of our favorite series, Redwall had to have its own page. Author Brian Jacques writes a new book every year, with the latest being Eulalia. You may also want to visit the Official Redwall Website and the Redwall Wiki. We have all nineteen spectactular Redwall books reviewed.
The Redwall books are not written in chronological order. We have figured out a rough order, however:
We have listened to several of the Redwall books on audiobook. They are very well done, read by the author with a cast of actors who play different characters. Buy Redwall on audiobook from Amazon.
Also by Brian Jacques:
Chronicles of Narnia
We are very excited that Prince Caspian has come to the big screen, continuing the series of all seven of C. S. Lewis’ Narnia books as movies! The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is very good and represents one of our favorite books very well. It does stray from the book in several places, but the main story from the book is there. Why not read the book before you see the movie?
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader movie will be released May 7th, 2010.
We have all of the books reviewed on our site.
You can buy the Narnia books in a complete boxed set from Amazon.
C. S. Lewis also wrote the Space Trilogy:

We’ve realized that while some books are treasures, others are worthless garbage. This site is our recommendations to anybody looking for a good book.
