I have a question... do devotions count? Like if I were reading a devotional book, say Our Daily Bread or something, would that count? We can count the bible too, right?

Ha! That's funny!
No, I just loved the book and want to read it again, but if it didn't count I thought I'd better read something that did. :)
Thanks!

Yes, you can read a book twice in a row if you'd like. Don't anybody get any ideas, but we had somebody last year who decided he'd try to read the same book over and over for three months, because he'd have it memorized and could read it faster and rack up more pages.

So as long as that's not your goal, go for it!

So... if you read a book, flip it over and read it again, (literally, cover to cover twice,) does that count as reading it twice? You said rereading old favorites, but twice in a row?

Understood. Yes, all of the peer's works I would be reading (or, I actually have an audio book of one friend's work!) would be type-written. I will convert all of them to those type specifications before taking a page count. Thank you!

Absolutely. It's not the prizes, anyway... it's the challenge. Thou mayest as well start being a happy camper right now, as I've already read a book that's been hiding in my basement for 2+ years!! I'm very happy about that, and there's more on my shelf begging for attention. But I'm finishing a library book first. :)

In a previous Read-a-Thon, we ruled against counting your own work because that makes it too easy to write something insignificant and read it over and over. For the same reason, I'll carry that over to this Read-a-Thon.

But reading a peer's work... Sure! It's not handwritten, right? So either figure out how many pages it is when printed, or check in your word processor for how many pages it is at... Let's say 12-point, single-spaced. That work for you?

By the way, let me make a little note:

I understand the push to read a lot. But as I end up pointing out every year, this isn't just about reading the most. We purposely made it possible for anybody, regardless of reading speed, to have a chance to win a prize. If you end up reading during your summer when you might otherwise have not, then you've fulfilled the goal of the Read-a-Thon and made me one happy camper. :-)

Audio books will be an interesting way of sneaking in some extra pages. Like Melody, there's a lot of times when I'm working that I could have an audio book, instead of music, going on in the background.

I have another question. If I read something substantial a peer (or I!) wrote, can I count the pages in some way? As a writer, I am often reading other people's drafts, as well as re-reading my own. Is there some way I can count this reading? Thanks!

Audio books take just as much time to listen to as actually reading a book, sometimes longer. So you're spending the same amount of time doing it.

The point is not just to read lots of pages, but also to be exposed to literature and books. To understand them. If listening to audio books helps you with that, I'm glad to count them.

I don't really think you should be able to LISTEN to audio books and count them as "pages". The R.A.T. should just be for reading books and not listening to them.

Okay, someone was saying they had read a sewing book or something... do craft books, sewing books, cooking books, and that kind of stuff count? My little sister and I have "raided" those sections in our library for our local Summer Reading Program.

Thanks, Jordan! I don't actually have any audio books, I only have FOFRT, but next time I get up to the library, I'll see what I can find for unabridged readings. :) (...I wish they had the Rob Inglis LotR cds, but they don't... I'll see what else there is. :D)

Oh, I think there are websites that do audio books of out-of-print classics. I should look that up! :)
