Summer has arrived and it finds a very bored Freddy. So when Freddy finds a help-wanted job asking for the services of caretaker for a big summer mansion, he’s sure that he has found the perfect way to spend a peaceful summer. Far from it! After taking the job, two toads, Elmo and Waldo, inform Freddy that there are rats in the attic who are destroying Mr. Camphor’s property. Simon and his gang are back to their old tricks, and Freddy must think of a way to get rid of them. And on top of that, Mr. Winch, the cook’s long-lost husband, returns with Horace, their boy, and decides to move in. Freddy knows that’s not allowed, but he can’t figure out a way to make them leave. Then, Mr. Winch starts planting stolen property on Freddy, so that when Mr. Camphor returns, he thinks Freddy has been stealing from him. So now, Freddy has gotten himself into a huge mess and must try to prove himself innocent.
As usual, Freddy manages to outsmart his adversaries with hilarious results. Elmo and Waldo are two very funny characters and Mr. Webb returns in an effort to form a bug’s cause in the war. This is another great Freddy book.

This is a great book! I like how Mr. Camphor and Bannister test out different proverbs such as: “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” It’s hilarious!

I wish Elmo and Waldo came back in later books.

This is a classic Freddy book! It’s non-stop humor and adventure, in a “Freddy-ish” sort of way. Definitely one of my favorite Freddy books.
