Peter Stuyvesant is the new director-general of New Amsterdam. He arrives in town to find the fort crumbling away, garbage in the streets, and animals roaming everywhere. Peter Stuvyesant sets out to fix this town, despite the lazy townspeople.
This book is written in rhyme. The text and pictures will keep you laughing. At the beginning of the book, there is a historical note about Peter Stuyvesant and the town of New Amsterdam. Make sure that you read this. It gives a good background for the rest of the book.

Giant John (Hardcover)
by Arnold Lobel
ISBN: 0805082956
Price: USD 11.53
37 used & new available from USD 9.45
Giant John and his mother have no food except two potato chips, so John goes off to get a job and make some money. What kind of job will he get? And what will happen when his friends the fairies want him to dance?
I was quite pleased to discover that Giant John is coming back into print. The story ends in a fun way that will leave everybody laughing at John’s attempts to help. Arnold Lobel’s pictures may be the best part, and I always get a kick out of the picture of John’s mother when he comes home at the end.

A wizard, who lived in a time in which there were no colors except black, white, and gray, invents the color blue. The rest of the people see him painting his house and want some blue. The wizard gives them his invention and they paint everything blue, which after a while, makes everyone sad. The wizard then invents yellow and red in turn, each having a different effect on everyone.
The Great Blueness, just like all of Arnold Lobel’s books that I’ve read, has a hint of silliness. Don’t forget to look at the pictures because a lot of the silliness is in the pictures.

Five stories about Frog and Toad, in which Toad makes a list of things to do and can’t do anything that is not on his list, Frog has a garden and Toad wants one also, Toad makes cookies and he and Frog must stop eating them using will power, Frog and Toad decide to see how brave they are and Toad has a very disturbing dream.
These stories are absolutely hilarious! Toad is the sort who likes everything to go just the right way and doesn’t like to wait either. Frog is quiet and willing to try things again. I think my favorite story in this book is the one about the cookies. And of course there’s Toad’s ever-present phrase: “Blah.” I highly recommend this book for younger readers.
