Anthea, Cyril, Robert, and Jane are back in a second book of adventures. This time, their mother buys a carpet, and when the children unroll it, an odd glowing egg falls out. Robert claims it and puts the egg on the mantle. Later, while the children are playing and waving tea-towels around, Robert’s knocks the egg into the fire and up from the flames rises the Phoenix! All the children are amazed, and even more so, when the Phoenix tells them that the carpet is a magic wishing carpet that will take them anywhere!

E. Nesbit is a great author. If you’ve read Five Children and It, you know that the children’s wishes never turn out the way they plan. It’s twelve chapters of wishes come true – but is that always a good thing?

A book of dragon stories by Edith Nesbit.

An enjoyable book! Also on this site we have Five Children and It, also reviewed by me and written by E. Nesbit. The Dragon Tamers is among my favorite stories in The Book of Dragons.

Five Children and It (Puffin Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
by E. Nesbit
ISBN: 0140367357

Cyril, Anthea, Jane, and Robert are all looking forward to vacationing in the country with their family, but no sooner do they arrive but they find a sand fairy, or Psammead, as he calls himself, who consents to give them a wish every day. Adventures follow, of course, and the children begin to discover that not all their wishes are what they anticipated.

Told in the usual, British, E. Nesbit style, I pull this book out now and then to enjoy. Most of the chapters cover a new wish every day, so there is a lot of variety, even if there isn’t really a driving, overall story.

You can also buy Five Children and It from Amazon in the United Kingdom and Canada.
