Chester Cricket’s beautiful stump by the brook has been squashed, and he is forced to move down the brook to a pond with Simon the old turtle, and Walter, a rather eccentric water snake, while he looks for a new home. Animals all over the Old Meadow volunteer to let the cricket stay with them, but he despairs of ever finding a real home again—not knowing that some of his friends have a trick up their sleeves.

A fun, light-hearted story, good for the whole family to enjoy. Though Harry and Tucker from A Cricket In Times Square don’t make an appearance, many other unique characters in Chester’s neighborhood do. Good for a short read.

A fun book. It's a little distressing when he's smashed flat. . . Just kidding! I only gave it one star because it's okay if you're looking for a quick, easy read. This is the sort of book that you read when you have a little snack to eat and you wanted to eat it while reading something mildly interesting. It's also light enough to enable you to look and see where you're putting your food, instead of being visually glued to the page. Enjoy, and munch in relative safety.

A boy named Mario finds him, and, though Mama is scornful, gets to keep him in an emptied matchbox in their newspaper stand. Chester meets Tucker the mouse and Harry the cat, both experienced foragers, and they become friends. But when the newspaper stand is accidentally set on fire during a dinner party of the three, and when Chester dreams about leaves and wakes up chewing a two dollar bill, will Mario be able to keep Chester?

A pretty good book! This is probably one of my favorite books of the Chester Cricket series. I like the part when Chester meets Harry. With humor and adventure, this is the first of the Chester Cricket series.

Chester Cricket finds himself stranded in New York, after falling asleep in someone’s picnic basket out in the Old Meadow. Lost and alone, he stays hidden under a newspaper near the station until a boy named Mario finds him and promptly adopts him as a pet. Mario’s family owns a newspaper stand, and the business is poor, but maybe Chester’s musical talent can help bring in more customers. As well as helping Mario’s family, the cricket has time for being with his new friends in New York: Harry Cat and Tucker Mouse, who live in the nearby drainpipe.

Though not one of my all-time favorites, this book is good now and then for a quick, fun read. Harry and Tucker add a lot to the story, with their personalities.
