Jim Kjelgaard
Jim Kjelgaard (1910-1959) loved the wilderness and consequently set his books there. A lot of his stories were written about boy or man and a dog. The books have exciting plots and the characters have real-life goals. Jim Kjelgaard also wrote historical fiction. (Rebel Siege is one.) Sadly, most of these books are out of print and you may have to go through inter-library loans to get them.
