Anything Radio Theatre is good! Especially Narnia and Les Miserables (even if they did add some random student named Jacques in place of a host of perfectly good ones, and take out Eponine’s fate.)

Odyssey isn’t any sort of audiobook, but I’ve always liked those We still listen to them on the radio.

Yup, I read it (alright, I admit I skimmed over some of the essays…) and loved it. And indeed, it is frightfully long…I had to check it out three times I think.

I’ve always been wary of dramatizations. We bought the BBC radio dramatization of Lord of the Rings at a library book sale once, and, believe it or not, though it was made in the 1970s or ’80s, they cut everything that the movie cut! Plus, the battles were pretty dumb. Whenever there was a fight or a battle, it was just a whole lot of yelling. You could never tell what was going on.

Of course, then we decided to try their dramatization of The Hobbit. That was sort of weird, because they kept changing narrators. First it would be a narrator, and then Bilbo would narrate, and then the narrator would come back. Kind of confusing. But they kept the story pretty well, I think. Oh, and they kept pronouncing people’s names wrong! Like Gollum became “Golloom”.

The Redwall ones are pretty good, since they are read by the author, and he has the most wonderful storytelling voice! Except they use different voices for the characters, and some of them don’t work very well. Also, I stopped several sentences into Redwall, because they were using the same voice for Matthias as they used for Wilf in Castaways, and it just didn’t work as both.

Ella Enchanted was also good.

We listened to all the FOTF Narnia Radio Dramas while on car trips, and I enjoyed them, except I didn’t like Aslan’s voice. I always cringe when I hear it. To me, it’s too harsh and gravelly, more suited to a villain than to Aslan.

I’ve only heard it on the commercials, but you’re right, he does sound too villain-y. Then again, I’m very used to Liam Neeson by now…
