MemberThis is for everyone to write about their dream library. Whether its in you town, or you house, write what you want it to look like, and which books would be the first to enter it!

MemberOoh boy!
My dream library would be the entire third floor of my house (I’d live and sleep on the other two floors). It would be reached through a winding secret passage hidden behind something interesting on the second floor. Abridged books would be banned, and the first books admitted would be anything I happen to be carrying when I enter. (Too many favorites to pick some firsts!)

MemberI don’t think I want my books to have a special room to themselves, I want to live with them and be around them. I think I want to keep them in the living room and dust them on every third Saturday.
I don’t think I need a huge area for them either, only large enough to house my favorites. Libraries are for learning whether or not they’re my favorites.
When I imagine my future house I generally imagine it to look like my Grandmother’s old apartment. A cracker box of a thing, even though I love spiral staircases I don’t really want anything very large because the cleaning and maintenance might be a little much for one person. (Yes, I’m odd enough to include realities like dustballs and bathrooms in my plans and dreams.) The living room is large with light colored walls and a looseyourtoes white carpet. No TV because the GMC is too expense and whenever I imagine myself with a TV I’m sprawled in a recliner oposite it wasting time. And I can’t afford to waste time.
Therefore without a TV I’ll have three walls worth of space, I’ll start my collection on the wall behind the couch. Floor to ceiling woodshelves broken up with pictures (like a black and white painting of a sewer entrance) and under the pictures low tables/stands for holding vases and nicknacks (like scupltures of the Eiffle Tower, &c. One of the stands will have to hold a radio/CD player and one of the spaces between shelves will hold a CD rack). In the middle of the room I’ll have a large coffee table for holding the currently readings and the chocolate and the pencils and paper. Also a couch, recliner, &c.
And I’ll have a fantastic collection of bookends. If the world has enough interesting/pretty ones to offer me, that is.
[edit]And the light fixture will not be a chandelier, infact, I think I want a collection of pretty, intricate standing lamps instead.

MemberMy dream library would be fairly large, with floor to ceiling shelves. The only areas that would not have shelves would be the windows, to let in light and a breeze, and a cozy stone fireplace for the winter.
One of the shelves will contain a CD/mp3 player, stocked with all my favorite music.
In the middle of the room, there will be several comfortable chairs, each with a side table to hold drinks, bookmarks, and the CD player remote. There will also be a desk, well-stocked with paper, pens, and pencils.
It should have ceiling lights, and a good reading light by each chair.
I think that’s about it, except it should be stocked with blankets, pillows, and a box of tissues for sad books. Oh, and the books themselves, of course.
A secret passage would be nice, but optional.

MemberI’m picturing bookshelves on practically every wall, with one of those spiral-staircase second-level deals like in My Fair Lady. A desk and a chair right next to a window… and some leather couches. Maybe a secret passage or a secret compartment in the desk or something.

MemberOh, that’s a good idea. The desk should go under the window. *mentally re-arranges furniture*
And a secret compartment in the desk would be nice.

MemberI’m picturing the sunlight falling through the window onto the desk…

MemberWhat is left to say?
I love sliding ladders.
And large, comfortable chairs.
And generous selections of music.
And I shall put my books in the Dewey Decimal System.
edit–
Quote:(like a black and white painting of a sewer entrance)Bwahaha–I need one of those!
edit again–Oh, finally thought of something. My public library has book quotes painted on the walls above the shelves–things like “You see, I don’t believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that’s been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians.” Of course that would frustrate the whole bookshelves-that-reach-the-ceiling scheme but I love that idea too much to part with it.
Mayhap I shall print C.S. Lewis quotes in spirals on the ceiling.

MemberBig room with 12 foot ceilings. Floor to ceiling shelves with a rolling ladders attached to reach to highest books. Plenty of posters and pics of my favorite authors. Behind Sigmund Brouwer’s picture will be a lever to pull back a shelf revealing the secret passageway to the pantry on the first floor. Surround sound stereo system that connects wirelessly to my iPod. Not to mention windows, skylights, desk, and the books that will be there…
You could dream about something like this all day. *sigh*

MemberThat is cool, Alyosha! Spirals on the floor but they might be hard to read on the ceiling. *replaces some of the paintings with a placks (sp) of quotes* I’ll cover the ceiling with my favorite words. In black calligraphy; which will be marvelously difficult to paint.
They have amazing pictures in Hobby Lobby, BTW. Makes me wish I didn’t have to share a office (turned bedroom) with three siblings. A little wall and floor space would be nice. If I had somewhere to start a collection I’d start now.
But writing in black all over my ceiling will mean I’ll have to change the wall and ceiling color to musty yellow which won’t work with my white carpet. A black carpet might be too depressing. But I could do it anyway, it might work with my black and white checkered furniture and wood
coffee table.
Maybe wood floors? I do prefer wood over carpet for a library…
*has really gaudy tastes* Maybe I should expand a little and have two living rooms so people won’t need to see someone after they visit.
[edit]A skylight sounds nice but would get in the way of my writing… For a desk I want one of those really huge and expensive ones with dozens and dozens of cubby holes. But it will go in my bedroom and match my really expensive bed with a headboard made of cubby holes and built in underbed storage. *wiggles eyebrows*

MemberI prefer wood floors. A skylight would be cool. Hmm, quotes painted on the ceiling might work. And I forgot to mention the surround sound earlier.

MemberI prefer carpet to wood floor, for the sole reason that carpet is more comfortable for grabbing a book at random, plopping on the floor, and reading.

Is the secret compartment in the desk for your favorite books that you wouldn’t let anyone else touch, ’cause you like them so much?

MemberLoL. Or perhaps it is for ancient Indian tablets…
(from a certain movie…)

MemberOkay my dream room is a combination of all of yours!(You guys have such great ideas!
)
We’ll start with the floor, it would have to be something very comfy and plushy, I don’t care much what color.
The ceiling would be full of sky lights, to let in light and to let me see the stars at night.
There would be a little (don’t want the books to catch on fire!) fireplace for the wintertime.
The walls would be COVERED with books. No paintings or anything.
A second level, with a spirial staircase, full of my favorite books, and a ‘secret’ passageway into a little out door room with a hammock and flowers (-cough- sunflowers) and vines.
No cd books (cause cd books aren’t books!) There would be nice lamps, and huge comfy, chairs that you could get lost in. The library would have a key that only I would have (and maybe one other person..Best friend?, but it would be a cool rustic old key.
