When Bill Rawl’s uncle dies of a heart attack, Bill is left with a little money and a general store. Bill decides to leave college and work the store out of debt. With his new friend, Rifle Eye Smith, and a stray dog called Lamb Chops, Bill must learn fast and avoid his mysterious enemies.
This is, so far, my favorite Kjelgaard book. My review does not do it justice. There’s plenty of action, and the way Bill and Jan (the store’s employee) get along is great. Lamb Chops is hilarious!

Somehow, every winter, a thousand elk disappear from a national park. To find out why, Tom Rainse (of A Nose for Trouble fame) sends Jase Mason, a wildlife photographer, into the park to find out. And what he finds is shocking. Now, if only he can get out of the park alive…
Not quite as exciting as some other Kjelgaard books, but still pretty good. Jase being a photographer, there’s a lot of him taking pictures, which sometimes is a little boring. The conclusion is good, if not a bit sudden. Still a good read, though.

A shopkeeper has two pets — a big goose, and a little white duck who can only quack very softly. A big boy wants to buy them for his mother, and because of a misconception that it was to be a present for him, his grandfather helps the big boy buy them. The grandfather is determined to eat the goose, but will the goose be able to prove himself useful before it’s too late?
This is a great book. There are some funny things in it. Please read this book! It’s pretty large print and it didn’t take me very, very, very long to read it. However, it’s probably larger than a normal picture book. Unfortunately, The Big Goose and the Little White Duck seems to be out of print. You can go to our Book Tips page for tips on finding books that are out of print.

Gasp! A furious moose! Actually, the moose is only a side plot. The real story is about Pete Gant the trapper and Casimir Zluski’s daughter, Helen. Pete and Helen barely have time to discover that they love each other, when Pete, believing that Helen doesn’t care about him, leaves — causing Helen to wonder whether he’ll ever come back.
Don’t panic. It ends well. The moose gets shot, Pete and Helen love each other and the story ends abruptly. Again. I suppose it’s good because it leaves you with the option of continuing the story on your own. I really appreciate how Jim Kjelgaard doesn’t “humanize” animals in his books.

When Aunt Docia comes and offers Pa a job further west, Pa accepts. The Ingalls move west and settle down by the shores of Silver Lake. (Thus explaining the title.)
There’s a pretty good amount of stuff happening in By the Shores of Silver Lake. The Ingalls don’t stay at Silver Lake for the entire book. I like By the Shores of Silver Lake. You may pick it up and expect to be bored, but it’s really not very boring! Even though there is a somewhat sad part near the beginning, please read this book.
