The champion Llew has returned to Albion, and Tegid the bard has made him king. However, spurred on by the evil Siawn Hy, Prince Meldron plans to usurp the throne. Going by bardic law (no maimed man can be king), he separates Llew from his sword hand, and Tegid from his sight. Undaunted, Tegid and Llew begin building a new city, where refugees from Meldron’s destruction arrive every day. Someday, Tegid and Llew hope to engage Meldron in combat, but Llew is from another world, as is Siawn Hy, and the only true way to save Albion is for them to return to their own world.
The Song of Albion trilogy takes a dark turn and leaves you guessing. Lawhead’s knowledge of Celtic myths, rituals, and customs serves him well. The result is a page-turner, if only to see how Llew can be king without his hand. I have a feeling that this one was more of a transition to the last book, so there might be a bit of filler. Overall, not a bad story, though I wish Lawhead would be a bit less gory.

Only a week before the meeting of Mycetian League (Mushroom Planet people who live on earth), Mr. Bass receives a strange phone call from one of the League leaders. Mr. Bass, David, and Chuck hurry to Wales, where the meeting is to take place, and discover that the two most prized treasures of the League have been stolen. One, the Necklace of Ta (leader of the Mushroom people on Basidium), causes trouble whenever somebody takes any of its stones. The other, The Thirteenth Scroll, is the only key to the Mycetians’ past. Mr. Bass and the others go on a search throughout England to find the missing treasures and encounter mysteries from the past about Mr. Bass’ long lost Elder Grandfather.
This is the conclusion of the Mushroom Planet series. It’s also one of the more weird ones. Digging deep into Mr. Bass’ past, and even into the ancestry of the Mycetians makes for an interesting read. I highly recommend that you read the other books that come before this one, though. I hadn’t read two that came before this one, and it was kind of a shock to hear about people that were in previous books that I hadn’t read.

Lewis and his roommate Simon live at Oxford. One day, Simon sees an article in the newspaper about a spotting of an extinct type of ox. He and Lewis go to check it out and find that it was killed with an ancient Celtic spear. On further investigation, they find a cairn (a Celtic monument type thing). Simon goes in, and though Lewis waits for him, he never comes back out. Lewis returns to Oxford and tries to live his normal life, but strange animals start roaming the streets, and then he meets a professor who claims that the Celtic Otherworld is real – and dangerous. Professor Nettles is sure Simon somehow got into the Otherworld, and he and Lewis go back to the cairn to find him. Lewis goes in, and now he’s in a strange world, surrounded by warriors about to begin a battle…
Whew! That’s just enough to get you going. There’s about two thirds of the book left that I didn’t even mention! The Paradise War is one of the better Lawhead books I’ve read. If you like Celtic myths, this one’s for you. Some of the ancient customs are really weird.

When Austin Webster brings home a digital camera from a garage sale and takes a picture of his Aunt Jessica’s prize winning beagle, the beagle, whose name is Applet, disappears! Austin and Ashley, his sister, are both sucked into the computer and get separated. Austin and Ashley go from site to site, trying to find Applet and each other. As if that weren’t enough, a Ms. Mattie Blankenskrean (try saying that out loud) is reprogramming or just plain erasing things such as people praying or a hymn. Can Austin and Ashley find each other, find Applet, and get Ms. Blankenskrean’s PDA, which she is using to reprogram and wipe out?
Warning: this book ends on a cliff hanger. If you’re thinking about getting this book as a present for someone, then you may want to buy book two of the Hyperlinz series, Fudge Factor. This book is recommended by Mrs. Donita K. Paul, author of DragonSpell and DragonQuest. You may find this book a little confusing, because it flips back and forth between Ashley, Austin, and Aunt Jessica. However, I like this book. Aunt Jessica is a fun character.

Okay….This book took me completely by surprise. When I picked it up, I was expecting a standard Walter Farley. The description on the back even pointed to it, by saying that Steve gets a chance to race Flame, but has trouble at the races with Flame attacking the other horses. That’s all true, however, it failed to mention that his opportunity is derived from two aliens/men from another planet. Yes, you read that right. Walter Farley goes science fiction. That sort of weirded me out. Actually, most of the story is based around the men from another planet, and the race is only in the last few chapters. I only rated it one star, but if you like sci-fi stuff, (and expect it coming!) it might be worth two stars.
