Actually, I was thinking almost completely opposite to you, Alassiel. I found the presence of the “Believers” to be an interesting bit, and I took it as a warning of what can happen when you forget what you’re believing in and just equate it to “We’ll be saved someday”. But whatever.
And the kids did regret that they broke the rules, unlike characters from, say, Eragon, who break the rules all the time and don’t ever feel bad.
That’s a different way of looking at it, Jordan. I never thought of that.
Sometimes they regretted it. But sometimes, they just seemed to do it without any thought at all. Like when they first want to look at the door, and Doon just immediately decides they will sneak in. It’s not a big thing, really, just slightly annoying.
Although, Doon seems to me an example of somebody who needs to learn that his first thought is not usually his best. As far as I saw, he learned a little bit, and I’ll have to wait until I get a chance to read book 2 to find out how well he learned it.
Excellent point. I agree.
Quick little off-topic thingy: Which characters in Eragon broke the rules? Cause I can’t honestly remember any.
Eragon himself breaks rule after rule. In the first book he steals a lot of stuff from trusted friends and makes excuses for it, and then in Eldest he breaks the Elves’ rules of training multiple times.
WELL! Shame on him.
I thought the Believers where a interesting concept…I didn’t mind the kids breaking the rules either. Except about them taking the key to the Pipeworks and it wasn’t that big of a deal.
Okay, dragging up an old thread…
I read the second one awhile back, and I thought it was a better plot, but a lesser book. How’s the third one?
Hrm…*looks it up on Goodreads* I gave CoE four out of five stars, People of Sparks 3/5, and Prophet of Yonwood 2/5. It didn’t have all that much plot, the characters weren’t particularly memorable, and I couldn’t quite figure out where she was going with her views on religion. It does fill in the rest of Ember’s history though.
Ten days to Diamond of Darkhold! (And Amazon says that it’s about Lina and Doon going back to Ember. Huzzah!)
edit– And an interesting cover:
There’s a fourth one?
Going back to Ember? Yay!

There’s a fourth one?
There will be–it’s coming out this month.
And now I have it out of the library. I have to read PoY first, though.
I ‘aven’t read any of ’em. On a scale from one to ten, what would y’all rate them for writing and plot quality? BTW, are they allegories? Or just fantasy?
