After Daniel’s father is murdered by the Romans, Daniel dedicates his life to one thing: revenge against the Romans. He joins a band of outlaws living in the mountains who are plotting to overthrow the Romans and does everything he possibly can to satisfy his hatred. Meanwhile, in nearby Capernaum, a rabbi is teaching a different lesson: love. Daniel is confused by the words of Jesus of Nazareth, while still wondering if this could be the promised Messiah. The Messiah he had been hoping and waiting for was one who could conquer the Romans and drive them away. Could Jesus really be the Messiah? And how can love conquer over hatred?
This is one of my favorites of Elizabeth George Speare’s. The characters are portrayed with great depth and emotion, making them seem very real, and I found the story to be so extremely interesting that I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend this one as a powerful book.

Dorothy lives on a gray prairie in Kansas. When a cyclone hits, she and her little dog, Toto, are whirled into the air and eventually come down in the Land of Oz, where the good Witch of the North advises Dorothy to go the City of Emeralds and ask the great Wizard, Oz, to send her home again. On the dangerous journey there, Dorothy is joined by the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion.
I like this book a lot. The Wizard of Oz was made into a movie starring Judy Garland. It’s not very close to the book, but it’s still pretty good. It was nice going back and reading this book again.

The emperor of the Island of Sampetra, Ublaz Madeyes, will stop at nothing to capture The Tears of all Oceans, six perfect pink pearls. His mad quest for them brings his general, Lask Frildur, a monitor lizard, and his army right into Mossflower Wood. When Lask captures the Abbot of Redwall, it is up to Martin to go across the sea, rescue the Abbot and slay Emperor Ublaz!
This is a great book! Lots of riddles, a great tongue twister and plenty of action. In case you’re wondering, this is not the original Martin. If you’ve read Redwall, you’ll remember that there was the first Martin, then Matthias, Mattimeo, and now Martin II, Mattimeo’s son.

When Trot, Cap’n Bill and Button Bright go for a ride on their magic umbrella, they accidentally end up on Sky Island where they are taken as slaves for Boolooroo, king of the Blueskins. They must escape, find the umbrella and the book of records to prove that the cruel Boolooroo has tricked his subjects by ruling for a longer time than he is allowed. They have reason to believe that the Pinkies inhabiting the other side of the island would aid them in overthrowing the king, but the island is separated by an impassable fog barrier.
Although this book has nothing to do with Oz, it’s written in the same manner that the well-beloved Oz books are. It has many hilarious word plays and makes a great read-aloud. I think this story proves that L. Frank Baum’s imagination truly has no limits. He’s created a Sky Island “somewhere over the rainbow” that readers of all ages can enjoy.
