MemberOkay, so I need books.
Small library, read it all. (literally…) Virtually no interlibrary loan. (it’s sad…)
Anyone want to trade books with me? I’m sure if I look, I could find a book or two that I could part with.
(if anyone’s interested, I could take a look on my shelves and post them tomorrow) Or perhaps I could knit or crochet you something in exchange for books that I want to read?
Books are easy to ship – usually between $1.50 or $2.50 to ship anywhere in the US. (first class for under 13 ounces, or media rate for over 13 ounces)
The books on my shelf typically stay in good to excellent condition – I am a stickler for keeping my books nice, but I usually don’t buy them new.
(Jordan, would this be acceptable on this forum?)

MemberThat IS sad. You poor soul!
What books were you looking for, anything in particular?
I’ve gotten to the point where I have pretty much all of the books I want/have space for, and the only ones I still really want are rare enough that I can’t find them anywhere but Amazon and such (Sad day.) and I don’t have very many to get rid of, BUT have you checked out BookMooch or PaperBackSwap? I’ve never used PBS but they’re basically the same thing. You send books, get points, and use the points to get books you want. It’s pretty great.
On second thought, the knitting idea sounds tempting. Want a copy of The Giver? I somehow acquired ten.

Member(This is perfectly fine… Just send any addresses through PM.)
I did BookMooch for awhile. It was somewhat scary to start with, though. You have to post at least ten books when you register, so I did, and I think half of them got snapped up before I had a chance to breath or even see if there was anything I wanted to mooch. So be aware of that…That said, BookMooch is pretty fun, though you won’t be able to do any knit-exchanges there.June 10, 2010 at 2:20 pm #45813Melody Kondrael
MemberI’ll post the books I have in a moment.
Thank you, Jordan!
I have considered BookMooch and PBS, but the problem is – my income is very variable so I can’t always be certain I’ll have enough stamps to ship a book if I have 10 books on at a time! (plus, I only found 4 on my shelf and 4 on my sister’s to trade…most of the books we have are not ours, but on long-term loan from my uncle who was homeschooled and had a ton of nice books) So with a one-on-one trade, I can ensure that I’ll always have shipping money by only agreeing to trades when I have money to ship.
What is “The Giver”? Is it by Lois Lowry? (a quick CBD search brought it up) Can you tell me anything about content, age level, etc?
As to what I can knit & crochet: I can make nearly anything. I have a sample knitting job, so I have to make custom things out around that (i.e. nights and weekends and whenever I don’t have a project–but I knit fast anyway). The book-to-knitting ratio would depend on what you want and how big the book is.
I have lots of machine washable yarn on hand, of many colors. I can get patterns off the internet – tell me what you want and I’ll present options. I have photos of my work–often I can duplicate something I’ve made before (usually in different colors, though, as I tend not to have more of a particular color of yarn)
I’m interested in lots of fantasy, sci-fi, and historical, as well as books on novel and screenwriting. This thread here (link) describes what kinds of books I’m allowed to put on my shelf. Note: bad language isn’t so much of a problem as long as it’s something I can black out.
Specifically….ummm… Wayne Thomas Batson books, anything from the Binding of the Blade series, Auralia’s Colors, hehe, you get the picture. Popular Christian fantasy books which not many people are likely to want to part with their copies of! But who knows, maybe someone didn’t care for a book, or got two copies for Christmas? Also, if someone has attempted to read a History of Middle-earth book and couldn’t get through it, I love those and don’t own anything except Unfinished Tales and the Silmarillion (and LotR, of course). Save the Cat! is also on my list, for any screenwriters who’ve moved past that.
But name whatever you have, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s wanting to trade books.

MemberBooks I have:
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis – mass market paperback ed, somehow we ended up with three copies through sharp watches at garage sales to replace broken books in our Narnia set…anyway, since one copy was falling apart, I’m trading one of the good ones.
Slightly creased cover – lays flat but looks creased. Tight binding, barely read. Good condition.
Starlight Animal Rescue bk 2 – Mad Dog by Dandi Daley Mackall – like new. Amanda Lynn Kondrael’s book. (that’s her username, it’s my sister)
Black Gold by Marguerite Henry – like new. Amanda Lynn Kondrael’s book. (she just grew out of these books shortly after receiving them for birthday/Christmas presents)
San Domingo, the Medicine Hat Stallion by Marguerite Henry – like new. A.L.M’s.
Mandie: Her College Days Book One – New Horizons by Lois Gladys Leppard – essentially like new, very little wear on top edge. ALM’s
In the Hands of the Potter by Dale Evans Rogers with Les Stobbe – hardback with dust jacket, has a nametag from previous owner on first page, and a poem taped under it. A few pages in the middle are rumpled slightly as if a bit of water was spilled on them. (I really don’t know – it did not happen while I owned it) Overall in very good to excellent condition.
Rainbow on a Hard Trail, Dale Evans Rogers: Her Story of Life and Love – hardback with dust jacket, nametag from previous owner on first page, otherwise like new. (I used to be big into Roy Rogers and Dale Evans; seems I ought to have a couple more of their books but don’t remember where I put them)
At Home In Mitford by Jan Karon – okay to good condition. I just bought this used about six weeks ago, and after flipping through it, decided it was not something I’d be interested in reading!
Previous owner’s name & bookplate in front. Creased, nearly cracked binding after about 90 pages – rest of book sound. As far as I saw, the pages were clean. Front cover and first pages look like there was a water spillage…? This book will still stand a lot of reading, though.
I tried to describe the books to the best of my ability.
Also, I have a excellent one-volume of The Dragon King Trilogy which after I re-read, I’ll consider putting up for trade. I’d have to be coerced with fantasy book(s), tho, ’cause I bought this one from amazon a couple months ago and just didn’t end up enjoying it as much as some of the other fantasy books on my shelf. As I recall, it’s pretty sound, but the binding has external crease marks and is not very square – comes of being such a thick book. (about 3″ thick) But as I said, that one I’m more loathe to trade in hopes that someday I’ll come to like it.

MemberHm… book trading. Unfortunately, if I own a book I’m rarely willing to part with it.
I’ve also discovered enough new authors and series at my library to keep me going for a while, including discovering where it is that they hide the Ellery Queen books. (My newest favorite detective.)
I do, however, still have an extra copy of MYST: Book of Ti’Ana. I started with three, gave one away to a friend who lost her copy, and there’s one extra still left. If I think of anything else, I’ll let you know.
June 10, 2010 at 7:29 pm #45816Melody Kondrael
MemberHey, someone recommended the Myst books to me just yesterday on a Christian fantasy writers forum. But…….my dad doesn’t like Myst, last I checked. I could double-check, though.
How is it that we voracious readers always end up with multiple copies of at least one book?
Hmm, if we all had wishlists, then perhaps if someone saw a copy of a book someone wanted at a thrift shop or yard sale, then we could buy it to trade! So, like, we’d all have our own post in the thread, and we’d keep it edited with what books we have and what books we are looking for.
What d’ya all think?
June 10, 2010 at 11:34 pm #45817Alassiel
MemberI wish I could help you out finding books. I have a decent sized collection of Christian fantasy stuff, but I don’t think there’s any I want to part with. And if there is, it’s probably because I didn’t like it much.
June 11, 2010 at 12:34 am #45818Alassiel
MemberWell, I went and checked out my shelves. I found a couple books I might want to trade and I might find more if I looked around a bit. I didn’t realize how many books we have duplicates of!
My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier- Paperback in good condition.
Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens- Mass market edition, pretty worn.
A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle- Pretty worn paperback.
This Present Darkness, by Frank Peretti- Paperback, good condition.
The Sword Bearer, by John White- Paperback in good condition. I’m not completely sure about this one. I started it and got bored, but I’m going to get my sis to read it and see what she thinks.
I’m not sure that some of these will fit your criteria for an acceptable read, Melody, but I thought I’d list them anyway. Anyone else have any books up for trade?
June 11, 2010 at 3:56 am #45819Alyosha
MemberHaha, we have three or four copies of LWW too. Actually we have at least three complete sets of the CoN, all random different editions.

I was thinking that too. If you post any particular titles I’ll be on the lookout for them.
ForeverFan might be interested in the Roy Rogers stuff if you want to PM her, she’s really into that.
Found some stuff I could be persuaded to part with (shock of shocks) and/or have two copies of. I think I am becoming less attached to my books than I used to be…
Lyddie by Katherine Paterson–HF about a Massachusetts mill girl. No objectionable content that I remember. A little worn, I got it used.
The Giver–as mentioned. Fairly good condition. Might have a couple library stickers. Nothing bad in it really although a few parts are a bit disturbing. YA dystopia/futuristic/technically-sci-fi-but-not-really
The South Beach Diet–LOL, this was my mum’s donation when I was really into Bookmooch, but there are ten thousand something copies listed so no one wanted it. TAKE IT! (Actually, don’t, ’cause it’s really heavy. It can just rot on my shelf
)
Dragon Spell by Donita K. Paul (autographed!) Won that in last year’s Read-a-thon actually, so it would be cool to give it to another Incredibook-er. It’s Christian fantasy. Like new.
The Hobbit–I don’t remember if I have two copies of this or if I gave one to my brother. Will check.
Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner–I love these books.
They’re a lot more clever than I realised when I read them at age eight! One of the books has some very slight water damage and some poem or something someone wrote in the front. Pretty good condition otherwise, but used.
Various L.M. Montgomery books
A bunch of Orphan Train Adventures by Joan Lowery Nixon (HF)
Half Magic by Edward Eager–one of those four-kids-have-an-adventure Nesbitish classicish type books. No objectionable content that I remember. The magic in question is typical fairy tale/fantasy magic. Nothing dark.
Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, and Mossflower. Kind of beat up. One (I think it’s Mattimeo) is held together by a rubber band. Good books though, and all the pages are there. (I think
) YA fantasy, not Christian but Christian worldview.
Papa’s Wife and Papa’s Daughter–story of a Swedish immigrant family. Sort of beat up. No objectionable content in the first, haven’t read the second.
The Story of the Von Trapp Family Singers–old copy with tacky 70s cover, but it’s a great story.
Vienna Prelude–Pre-WWII HF. Christian.
I also have a lot of classics like The Secret Garden and Little Women and Peter Pan and Oliver Twist, and a bunch of Frank Peretti novels (The Darkness books, Prophet, The Oath), that I don’t have two copies of but wouldn’t mind trading because they’re so easy to find in used bookstores around here. I have some writing books but I don’t remember the titles–I’ll check when I get home.
If anyone has a copy of The New Treasure Seekers, I claim it!
Re. BookMooch: I don’t remember having to post ten books right away…I was on there forever before I ever sent or mooched anything. You do get 1/10th of a point for every book you list, though (so you could list ten, mooch one, and then unlist your ten). In practise it’s a lot more flexible than the description makes it sound–you can always put in your profile that it might be a while before you can send things (I did, as I can only get over the border to the American post office every few weeks) and people usually don’t mind. *end shameless promotion*
Re. knitting: I was thinking probably a tuque and/or black fingerless gloves, is that doable? (Assuming you want any of the above books of course, which you probably don’t.
)
June 11, 2010 at 11:29 am #45820Jordan
MemberBookMooch-wise, that was why you had to list ten, to get enough points to mooch something… But I listed my ten, and in the fifteen minutes I spent looking for something to mooch, I had three or four mooched. They go fast. And I’ve never been able to get to anything on my BookMooch wishlist before somebody else snaps it up, either.
June 11, 2010 at 12:28 pm #45821Melody Kondrael
MemberOkay, you’re in Canada, Alyosha? Just checking because if you happened to live in some far off country, it might be too expensive to ship things…
Define: ‘tuque’ (I think you mean ‘toque’ but either way, it’s not really in my vocabulary.
Just seen it on some hat patterns every once in a while…) I am familiar with beanies, slouchy hats, berets, tams, etc, but not toques.
I’m very familiar with fingerless gloves. There are about 10 different styles. Describe what you mean. (feel free to take this to PM, I just have too many tabs open to do it myself right now…)
I’m interested in the Hobbit (I don’t own it ::gasp:
, DragonSpell, The Giver (I’ll take a risk on ‘disturbing’ – the reviews on CBD made it sound like it’s probably appropriate for my maturity level and necessary to the story.
), and….what is the reading level of Lyddie and the two about the Swedish immigrant family? Age appropriateness, so to speak? (i.e. are they ages 8-12 books or teenager-level or adult-level?) And then we can discuss what to trade for…
I live in Iowa, btw, if you need to check shipping costs.
Funny, we must read a bunch of the same types of books.
I’ve read that Von Trapp family book; back when I had ILL.
I also read some of those Orphan Train ones, and I already have L.M. Montgomery books and many classics along the lines of Little Women.
(I also use the Gutenburg project for ebooks of classics)
“The New Treasure Seekers” – is that by E. Nesbit? I think you might be able to download that as an ebook from gutenburg.org, but you’d have to check…I did see a bunch of her books on there, though I only read a couple.
Alassiel, actually, do check with your sister on the Sword Bearer! My uncle owns 5 out of 6 of those books, and while I don’t like them as much as Narnia or LotR (what could beat those?!?!?) they were still good. He likes them so much he won’t let me borrow his copies permanently, unlike many of his other childhood books… so I would be interested in the Sword Bearer.
Interested in anything I’ve got?

MemberThe only thing in the Myst books that could be objectionable is the Art. It all depends on how you look at that. It’s a major part of D’Ni culture so it figures in the plot, but the whole thing seems more SciFi than Fantasy to me. IMO.
I think I also have an extra copy of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, although I’m not sure where it came from so I don’t know why I’d have it.
Some of those books you people have listed sound really good! Enough to make me want to ransack my library!
But yeah, we’ve got a one sided conversation going here. We have the books we don’t want, but very few lists of what we do want!June 11, 2010 at 5:41 pm #45824Alassiel
MemberC Triebold, I would definitely be interested in Eternity’s Edge and Nightmare’s Edge and maybe The Hand that Bears the Sword and The Battle for Vast Dominion. (Where do you get two copies of all these books?!) Unfortunately, I don’t think I have anything you want. Maybe I’ll go hunt through my shelves again… Anything in particular you’re looking for?
Melody, I don’t really think I want any of your books. I’ve got some already. Never heard of the Dale Evans Rogers ones. What are they? I might like to try the Dragon King Trilogy- that’s Lawhead, right? I tried his Arthur books and thought they were a bit slow/boring/windy. I don’t know if this one would be more interesting.
Janin, do go ransack your library! It’s probably easier to list what we don’t want than what we do- the books we want lists might get too long.
