MemberIt’s a widely known fact that homeschoolers are addicted to good books and reading.
I noticed that a few Incredibooks Members have homeschool blogs. So tell us! What resources do you use, what books have you discovered in homeschooling and loved or hated, and what is your take on *shudders* textbooks?
Note: Those who do not homeschool are welcome to read and post. P’raps you’ll discover something!

MemberI do the Beautiful Feet history, which involves reading books, mostly historical fiction, to learn history. Through this, I have discovered so many good books that I might never have read otherwise. I have loved almost every book they have recommended.
I mostly dislike textbooks. There are so much more interesting ways to learn. Fortunately, my mother is not too fond of textbooks either, and she gives me alot of freedom in choosing curriculum. I think the only textbooks I use are the Apologia science ones, and I don’t mind those much.

MemberOoh, I’m using Apologia; I hated the physical science one, hopefully the biology will be better. I saw Dr. Jay Wile at a curicculum convention. I’m taller than he is! “Uh, hi, Mr. Science Man!” *looking downwards*
We just got the school program for this fall via FedEx yesterday; it’s Sonlight, packed full of BOOKS!!!!!!! I’m so excited!

MemberI’m currently about halfway through Apologia’s Physics book. Love it!

MemberBlecky!

MemberDitto!
Homeschool books? I can’t remember the last time I read a book for school, since most of my classes are at public school and elsewhere now. I don’t have anything against textbooks unless they happen to be about physics or maths.
I am quite fond of my English text.

MemberMath, ugh! Least fav. subject.
It’s funny
the things I am able to read for school. Things like Black Beauty, Mere Christianity, The Illaid! I keep track of ‘school’ books, it’s quite varied.

MemberPip here again; what about read-alouds? Lotsa curicculums have ’em. My parents often read aloud books, I read to my younger siblings a lot, and Dad has an ongoing nighttime story. Right now it’s Master Cornhill by McGraw.

MemberOoh, yes. We don’t read aloud for school, but I’ve recently acquired the habit of reading to my siblings (my mum used to but she’s too busy now). We’re in the middle of The Silver Chair now, and after that will go onto The Last Battle (terribly out of order I know). Spread the Narnia fandom! woohoo!
Your curriculum assigns books to read aloud? What sort?

MemberMy siblings refuse to listen when I read to them. (Mostly.) Though I’ve been read to on numerous occasions. It’s the only reason I know I like Robinson Crusoe actually, though someday I aught to read that one for myself.

MemberI read aloud to my siblings fairly often. Over the past couple of years, we’ve read most of the Redwall books, the Prydain Chronicles, and a bunch of assorted other books. We’re currently reading The First Two Lives of Lukas-Kasha. Lloyd Alexander is alot of fun to read aloud.
June 27, 2008 at 11:38 pm #42533Pip
MemberWe’ve read tons and tons of books in the past, including all but the last Prydain Chronicles, but I’m waiting till my siblings are older to read the Redwall books (one of them is a bit squeamish when it comes to bloody battles and the like!).
That’s funny, Owan; I keep a list of all the books I’ve read (besides to-read ones hanging around all over the place!) and whenever I finish hearing a book read to me, I put it down as read, because my mind is still processing the info, even if my eyes are elsewhere.
Alassiel, we read all sorts of books for school! “How’s Inky” by Campbell, “Carry on, Mr. Bowditch” is a biggy in many home-education programs, “The Tooth-paste Millionaire” was actually in my younger siblings’ program…Plus extra-curiccular junk like library stuff, to-read lists, endless titles of “Oh, you should read THIS!!!” papers and etc.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that every book we read for homeschool is warm and fuzzy, and I’m not saying I don’t like certain things about homeschool (not as many benefits, not as many ministry opportunities, things like that), and indeed, some books I’ve had to read were real crummy! But if I had to choose, I’d homeschool all the way!

MemberOH! Carry on Mr. Bowditch! That’s a great one.
We read a lot of books during school. It’s fun.

MemberYeah, Dad always gets revved up about seafaring tales. By the way, anybody come across any in their school? Seafaring tales, I mean. I’ve read Marial of Redwall, and Mutiny on the Bounty, and Treasure Island, so what else is out thar?
June 27, 2008 at 11:49 pm #42536Alassiel
MemberI haven’t found any through school, but I like seafaring stories, and there’s just too few of them out there. The Voyage of Patience Goodspeed is good. I’ve only read the first one in the Midshipman Hornblower series, but it was alright.
