MemberSweeney Todd is not some R-rated horror flick; it’s a complex, thought-provoking musical/opera (I forget what it’s officially classified as) that unfortunately happens to have a lot of blood.
[/Alyosha defending a movie she actually hasn’t seen yet but loves the stage version and music of]
He says he wants to stay true to the book’s essence…
But yeah, ditto, I hope Wonderland doesn’t turn out too creepy and adult. It’s supposed to be a kids’ story…

MemberOops. Sorry, I always get Sweeney Todd mixed up with There Will Be Blood, which came out around the same time. Both sounded Burton-esque, so I confuse them.
And staying true to the book’s essence can mean a lot of things. Think Prince Caspian.
Oh, and Tim Burton did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (new one). How’d he do with that?

MemberOoh, that was good! The fact that Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka is odd in and of itself, but that was about the only weird thing about that newer version. The book is fresh and entertaining, as well.

Unfortunately, yeah. It seems to be one of those relative terms that filmmakers toss around without really meaning anything.
I wonder if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will have any part in AiW; I bet they will

MemberYeah, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter…oh, dear!

MemberThe classics thread reminded me of a movie that stinks: Around the World in 80 Days (the most recent one). They hardly kept any of the original plot beyonds the basics. Passepartout is not a Chinese guy pretending to be a French valet who is actually trying to get the stolen jade Buddha back to his family in China!!! And there is no evil Oriental lady attempting to kill Phileas Fogg so she can get land from the British Goverment! Besides that, the quality of the movie is terrible.

MemberOh, horrors! I could hardly get past the commercial, Alassiel!!!!! Having loved the book, my siblings and I decided to pass that one up…
Note: To those of you wondering, Fogg is a middle-aged man, not a teen, he has normal hair, thankee, NOT long, and he’s very gentlemanly and unimpulsive and the movie just ruined him!!!!!!!!
Even in the old version, Passepartout is Spanish. I’d like to see him French for a change.

MemberEek! Sounds like they messed it up!

MemberTotally. The Last Sin Eater is supposedly based on a book by Francine Rivers. It was a pretty good movie. Have to check out the book…*scheming*

MemberPip here again; somebody should make a movie of the Eagle of the Ninth. They might improve it!
My siblings and I once tried watching the Disney version of The Black Cauldron, based on Lloyd Alexander’s book by the same name…oh, my, GOODNESS!!!!!! It was so morbid, we had to turn it off. Last year, I sent a letter to the Disney studios, saying that they should make a real-life movie of the Prydain Chronicles. I mean, that would be AWESOME! They could stick SOOOOOOO much into those movies and make it epic. Thoughts on that, anyone?

MemberI saw the Disney version of Black Cauldron at the library, took one look, and knew it was terrible. The movie adaptation of Ella Enchanted stinks too. I love the book, but they ruined the movie.
June 27, 2008 at 2:32 am #42378Pip
MemberYeah, the book of Ella Enchanted was so cute, and they took it and turned it into a big teen pop bonanza to show off Anne Hathaway! (Sorry, but that huge smile of hers just gives me the creeps) /

MemberWhoa! *gasps at Around the World in Eighty Days summary*. . . . why didn’t they just give it a new title and call it good?
The Door Within books would make a really, really intense movie. There’s no way I could watch it. Particualarly with the Trapdoor spiders and when they’re inside Paragory.

MemberRebekah, you must be a mercy person. I’m afraid I’m not much of one! I would dote upon the battles. Funny how that works.
(How do you get a laughing smiley?)

MemberNo idea. . . maybe  ? Guess it didn’t work. Hmm.
I just don’t take graphic violence well. And spiders are NOT my thing.
Has anyone here seen the cartoon verison of Watership Down? I have only spotted the DVD on a shelf, but I’d think the makers would have to pretty much cut half the book to make it decent for little kids.
EDIT: Aha! It did work! Okay, it’s : lol : minus the spaces.
