MemberShadowmancer – G.P. Taylor – 273 pages
Okay, I’ve read stuff by this author before, but this one did not meet his usual standards. The plot was weak, there wasn’t a good setup, and the ending fell apart. There were also a few grammatical errors scattered throughout the book.
Swiss Family Robinson – 446 pages
I liked this book, but most of it is just details, describing how they survived on the island. There was not very much conversation, and there were grammatical errors in abundance. Other than that, I highly reccommend it. (Narnia365, I do NOT suggest that you read this book. I doubt you’d get through the first chapter.)
Running Total – 1033 pages

MemberI’m not sure if this has been asked before, but can magazines count?
June 8, 2010 at 11:41 pm #45324Jordan
MemberI’m going to say no, magazines don’t count. Even though the word count isn’t as much of an issue, I think it will be simpler just to say that only books count.
And if somebody has a good word for books that excludes comic books, graphics novels, etc., shout it out so I can update the rules.June 9, 2010 at 6:42 pm #45325Pip
MemberI realized a minute ago that I don’t know when the RAT ends. Is it the last day of August? Sooner? Later?
June 9, 2010 at 8:19 pm #45326Jordan
MemberYes, the last day of August.

MemberIs it okay if you only read a section of a book, and then decide it’s not worth finishing, and still log in the number of pages you read?
June 10, 2010 at 3:24 pm #45328Jordan
MemberYes, that is fine.

MemberSure, an encyclopedia counts if you end up reading at least an entire page…

Membercan I count audio books like Focus on the Family Radio Theatre? We could come up with a minute-to-page ratio. Because I haven’t got a lot of time to read-read, because I have a sample knitting job, but I like to listen to radio dramas and audio books on my cd player.

MemberIn my understanding, Focus on the Family Radio Theatre is a dramatization, not a reading. So that could get a little iffy. Somewhat (though not entirely) akin to watching the movie and saying you read the book.
I’m unfortunately not familiar enough with Focus on the Family Radio Theatre to make an accurate judgement for a minute-to-page ratio, and I’d think the ratio would change for each show. So based on that information, I’m going to say that dramatizations do not count.
Audio books, however, are fine. You can convert them to page counts by going to Amazon and getting the page count for the physical book. You should make sure the book matches… It’d be bad if you listened to the abridged version and then counted pages for the unabridged version. (Same applies to the other way ’round)@Everybody asking questions about what counts… Thanks a bunch for helping us refine the rules! We’ll incorporate some of these clarifications into the rules page for the next Read-a-Thon and hopefully make things less confusing.June 14, 2010 at 5:49 pm #45333Melody Kondrael
MemberThanks, Jordan! I don’t actually have any audio books, I only have FOFRT, but next time I get up to the library, I’ll see what I can find for unabridged readings.
(…I wish they had the Rob Inglis LotR cds, but they don’t… I’ll see what else there is.
)
Oh, I think there are websites that do audio books of out-of-print classics. I should look that up!
