The story of the Black before meeting Alec. Abu Já Kub ben Ishak breeds the fastest and strongest Arabian stallions. One black colt stands out from the others as being the largest and wildest. Soon, though, the Black is stolen by a Bedouin scout, who is working for Mansoor the Cat. What will become of the Black?
The last Black Stallion book by Walter Farley. It’s a moderately quick read, and I didn’t enjoy it as much as the others. It is interesting to gain a little background history about Abu Ishak, but, overall, it’s not a must-read of the Black Stallion series.

When Melissa’s Uncle Fred receives some very unusual eggs for his pet shop, they prove to be lots and lots of different dragons! Melissa agrees to take them home and document their likes, dislikes, and general behaviors. For example, the Nidgets are rather timid and find comfort with small, round objects, the Dweebs tend to be a bit destructive, the Floaters are very useful in housecleaning, the Camos will eat everything in sight, and so on…
Wonderful! Find this book right away and read it! The dragons are so funny, and the illustrations are excellent. You may enjoy the special bonus of the dragons’ “latin names” in the end of the book. The Camos’ is “Gluetenous Fridgidarium.” Unfortunately, How to Choose Your Dragon is out of print, but you should check your library—they might just have it!

Jimmy Creech, owner of the mare “Volo Queen,” is awaiting the arrival of the Queen’s foal. Jimmy, his friend George Snedecker, and a young boy named Tom, hope that this foal will become a famous horse. Sired by the Black Stallion, the colt turns out to be all they hoped for, but when Jimmy’s stomach pains grow worse, racing the colt becomes their last hope for the money they need to pay for Jimmy’s doctor bills.
Wonderful! The huge race at the end is heart-pounding action clear through. Walter Farley gives his characters such depth in this story, you feel like you know them. Tom’s Aunt Emma and Uncle Wilmer are funny. Overall, I like this one very much. It’s one of the better Black Stallion books, in fact, one of my favorites, after The Horse Tamer and The Black Stallion.

When Jeff Tarrant, a peddler, adopts a huge, scraggily stray dog, little does he know what he’s getting himself in for. Imagine his shock when he finds that the dog’s former owner was murdered, leaving behind a young son, Dan, who, sure that the killer is one of the Whitney family, is determined to hunt down and slay his father’s murderer. Convinced that such a young child shouldn’t be set on killing anyone, Jeff steps in to find the killer and hand him over to the law. Unfortunately, in trying to scare one of the Whitneys, Dan pretends that Jeff is a policeman, putting the Whitneys on the alert and creating a lot of danger for Jeff.
A very interesting book. At first it seemed a little slow, but there’s a real thrilling part toward the end of it. The ending is kind of abrupt, but I’ve noticed that in all the Jim Kjelgaard books I’ve read. (Of course, so far, that’s a whopping four books.) Don’t worry about your heart stopping with the dangerous and tense part. You’ll probably just sigh. “Ah!” you ask. “What sort of sigh?” There’s only one way to find out! Ask someone! (“No, wait. That wasn’t it. Oh, yes. Ahem.”) Read the book!

The Pye family, complete with Ginger and Gracie, were going to spend the summer on Fire Island! Once there, they find an “abandid” kitten named Pinky. The Pyes decide to keep her. They find out she has unusual talents, such as boxing with Ginger and even typing on their typewriter! Uncle Bennie came to Fire Island with them and develops an interest in crickets and grasshoppers. He starts keeping them as pets and Rachel will put them, inside their cricket and or grasshopper box, up in the eaves. But when they start disappearing… what’s up?
This is a great book. You can probably guess what’s up, so I didn’t categorize it as a mystery. Still, Pinky’s cute and I like the epilogue.
