“Don’t lend them to younger siblings without first securing some collateral” is my only tip. Ignore it at your peril. :P

Really though, my siblings have gotten a lot better about that and I’m usually too happy that they’re actually READING ONE OF MY BOOKS! to mind. Although they still get lectures if they bend the covers or tear pages. My books are mostly secondhand, so they aren’t in pristine condition…I like them like that, they feel more accessible and I’m not always worrying about how they look.

…all that to say, I have no advice…

Last night was fun…  Facebook was like five minutes late posting it so people were complaining (sheesh), and then NW crashed for a bit, and then I stayed up far too late reading everyone’s comments about it. :P

Anyhow, I didn’t have very high expectations, so it was pretty good. Ramandu’s Daughter looks radioactive. The hackneyed, generic fantasy phrases got on my nerves and if they do to Edmund what they did to Peter I’m going to be irate. How many times must we go through the “poor me, I was a king and now no one takes me seriously so I’m going to be angsty and arrogant about it” routine? Here’s hoping!

Loved the Dufflepuds, Eustace (the little we saw), and the glimpses of the end of the world. And Coriakin and the library and the book! The whole tone of it was so bright and blue–I’m glad they’re not trying to make it Dark, Gritty, and Epic like PC.

I was REALLY hoping that they wouldn’t turn the Lone Islands into an action scene Just Because We Can. The way the book gets around it by not turning it into a battle is much cleverer.

I like that they’re adding some more wartime Britain parts and I could totally see Edmund trying to sneak into the army. :P

I hope the Susan and Peter thing is a flashback too, but they’re all against the same background while the younger two are wearing their Dawn Treader clothes…

Narnia.com has been updated. Not much new info, but some gorgeous pictures!

Trailer tonight at midnight! (For once I am glad to live in PST :P ) Anyone staying up to see it?

Not before reading the book… The first time I skip the introduction, especially. I don’t like reading the book through someone else’s eyes, and more than a few times they’ve given away spoilers (thanks a lot, publishers of Dickens!). I go back and read all of it if I liked the book enough.

Will PM you about the knitting stuff. :)

My wishlist has 330 books on it (some are multiple editions, but still) so I will refrain from posting it. They’re all relatively obscure. None have come up on BookMooch in forEVER.

I read The Book of Ti’ana aaages ago and remember liking it. My library is missing The Book of Atrus. Alas.

    Found some more stuff:

Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan. YA HF about Norway in WWII (written during the war!). Haven’t read it yet (I have two copies) but it’s come recommended from friends whose opinions I trust very much. A little worn, and the cover was folded.

In His Steps by Charles Sheldon. Definitely Christian.

From Anna by Jean Little. YA HF about a German family who comes to Canada before the war.

Abby, Lost at Sea by Pamela Walls. YA HF about a girl whose family goes to Hawaii in the 1840s. Also involves pirates and such. Christian.

    Quote:
BookMooch-wise, that was why you had to list ten, to get enough

    points

to mooch something… But I listed my ten, and in the fifteen minutes I

spent looking for something to mooch, I had three or four mooched. They

go fast. And I’ve never been able to get to anything on my

BookMooch wishlist before somebody else snaps it up, either. :-(

Does that mean you have a bunch of unused points lying about? Sadness.

    Quote:
I’m interested in the Hobbit (I don’t own it ::gasp::),

    DragonSpell, The

Giver (I’ll take a risk on ‘disturbing’ – the reviews on CBD made it

sound like it’s probably appropriate for my maturity level and necessary

to the story. :D), and….what is the reading level of Lyddie and the

two about the Swedish immigrant family? Age appropriateness, so to

speak? (i.e. are they ages 8-12 books or teenager-level or adult-level?)

And then we can discuss what to trade for… :) I live in Iowa, btw, if

you need to check shipping costs.

All right then :) Yes I do have a copy of the Hobbit, I checked. It’s a little worn as it came from my church library.

Mm…Lyddie is a children’s book, although I don’t know about 8-12 (my eight year old brother sure wouldn’t/couldn’t read it. Or it wouldn’t keep his interest). The other two aren’t written for kids but the reading level is not a whole lot above most YA fiction.

    Quote:
“The New Treasure Seekers” – is that by E. Nesbit? I think you

    might

be able to download that as an ebook from gutenburg.org, but you’d have

to check…I did see a bunch of her books on there, though I only read a

    couple. :)

Yep, it’s on Gutenberg–I read it there, but I want

my own copy. (but am too stingy to fork over for it :P)

Books I’m interested in (so far):

    DragonSpell

    by Donita K. Paul

I would send it but I don’t really see anything on that list that I

want…sorry! I’m not really a fan of fantasy (especially modern

Christian fantasy. Yes, the forum may now collectively fling tomatoes at

    me…)

    Quote:
Wow, how do you get books to review from publishers? I have often

wondered that. (I have heard of Booksneeze but haven’t signed up yet)

Some publishers also let you sign up for their programs–like HarperCollins’ First Look (which is on hiatus right now but I know people who’ve had great success with it in the past). I’ve never done it though, I’m too picky about the books I read and would probably write scathing reviews and end up with angry publishers after me… Anyway. Having an established book blog or site is always helpful.

All and Sundry for me. I like Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, Lord Peter Wimsey… Never got into Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys.

But my favourite detectives ever are the boys (can’t remember all their names) in Detectives in Togas and Mystery of the Roman Ransom. :D

It’s absurdly late so I’ll answer this tomorrow except for

    1. Yeah, I live in Canada, but we have a post box in Washington, so extra postage is no issue for you. (I probably wouldn’t swap if we didn’t, because mailing anything from/within Canada is ABSURDLY expensive. Socialist government, bah. :P)

and 2. Ha, I knew it was toque! I’ve always spelt it like that but Wikipedia insisted it was “tuque”. Whatever. Like this. Is that the same as a beanie? Wait, a beret would also be awesome. I will contemplate this :P (How do berets, tams, and “slouchy hats” [never heard that term, haha] differ?)

Haha, we have three or four copies of LWW too. Actually we have at least three complete sets of the CoN, all random different editions.

    Quote:
Hmm, if we all had wishlists, then perhaps if someone saw a copy of a

book someone wanted at a thrift shop or yard sale, then we could buy it

to trade! So, like, we’d all have our own post in the thread, and we’d

keep it edited with what books we have and what books we are looking

    for.

I was thinking that too. If you post any particular titles I’ll be on the lookout for them.

ForeverFan might be interested in the Roy Rogers stuff if you want to PM her, she’s really into that.

Found some stuff I could be persuaded to part with (shock of shocks) and/or have two copies of. I think I am becoming less attached to my books than I used to be…

Lyddie by Katherine Paterson–HF about a Massachusetts mill girl. No objectionable content that I remember. A little worn, I got it used.

The Giver–as mentioned. Fairly good condition. Might have a couple library stickers. Nothing bad in it really although a few parts are a bit disturbing. YA dystopia/futuristic/technically-sci-fi-but-not-really

The South Beach Diet–LOL, this was my mum’s donation when I was really into Bookmooch, but there are ten thousand something copies listed so no one wanted it. TAKE IT! (Actually, don’t, ’cause it’s really heavy. It can just rot on my shelf XD)

Dragon Spell by Donita K. Paul (autographed!) Won that in last year’s Read-a-thon actually, so it would be cool to give it to another Incredibook-er. It’s Christian fantasy. Like new.

The Hobbit–I don’t remember if I have two copies of this or if I gave one to my brother. Will check.

Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner–I love these books. ;) They’re a lot more clever than I realised when I read them at age eight! One of the books has some very slight water damage and some poem or something someone wrote in the front. Pretty good condition otherwise, but used.

    Various L.M. Montgomery books

A bunch of Orphan Train Adventures by Joan Lowery Nixon (HF)

Half Magic by Edward Eager–one of those four-kids-have-an-adventure Nesbitish classicish type books. No objectionable content that I remember. The magic in question is typical fairy tale/fantasy magic. Nothing dark.

Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, and Mossflower. Kind of beat up. One (I think it’s Mattimeo) is held together by a rubber band. Good books though, and all the pages are there. (I think :P) YA fantasy, not Christian but Christian worldview.

Papa’s Wife and Papa’s Daughter–story of a Swedish immigrant family. Sort of beat up. No objectionable content in the first, haven’t read the second.

The Story of the Von Trapp Family Singers–old copy with tacky 70s cover, but it’s a great story. :D

    Vienna Prelude–Pre-WWII HF. Christian.

I also have a lot of classics like The Secret Garden and Little Women and Peter Pan and Oliver Twist, and a bunch of Frank Peretti novels (The Darkness books, Prophet, The Oath), that I don’t have two copies of but wouldn’t mind trading because they’re so easy to find in used bookstores around here. I have some writing books but I don’t remember the titles–I’ll check when I get home.

If anyone has a copy of The New Treasure Seekers, I claim it!

Re. BookMooch: I don’t remember having to post ten books right away…I was on there forever before I ever sent or mooched anything. You do get 1/10th of a point for every book you list, though (so you could list ten, mooch one, and then unlist your ten). In practise it’s a lot more flexible than the description makes it sound–you can always put in your profile that it might be a while before you can send things (I did, as I can only get over the border to the American post office every few weeks) and people usually don’t mind. *end shameless promotion*

Re. knitting: I was thinking probably a tuque and/or black fingerless gloves, is that doable? (Assuming you want any of the above books of course, which you probably don’t. ;))

I’m in the middle of Heaven’s Wager. It’s ok. I haven’t picked it up in about five days and I’m halfway through, if that says anything. :P I’m not really a fan of the style. Short on character development, long on Fragments. Incomplete Sentences. And. Stream of Conciousness.

Need to read Blink, some friends of mine said it was excellent…

That IS sad. You poor soul!

What books were you looking for, anything in particular?

I’ve gotten to the point where I have pretty much all of the books I want/have space for, and the only ones I still really want are rare enough that I can’t find them anywhere but Amazon and such (Sad day.) and I don’t have very many to get rid of, BUT have you checked out BookMooch or PaperBackSwap? I’ve never used PBS but they’re basically the same thing. You send books, get points, and use the points to get books you want. It’s pretty great. :)

On second thought, the knitting idea sounds tempting. Want a copy of The Giver? I somehow acquired ten. :P

Whoa, Owan, you’re like…still alive! Hi.

No, not her. Katherine Paterson is much better–technically speaking. I like her writing about writing better than her actual writing, in general. (After a recent reread, I’m not sure what I saw in Kit Pearson way back when…)

My issue with Swiss Family Robinson is that the climax happens in the first chapter. No. No. No. :P

Song of the Ovulum? As in…eggs? Weird…

Any details on what it’s about? All the of the characters seemed to have been pretty much taken care of with the last series :P

    (sorry, it’s stuck on italics)

The Invisible Child by Katherine Paterson. Fantastic. Love it.

Also Bridge to Terabithia, which I like much more after seeing the film than I did before. Shocking.

I’ve seen worse covers. Looks all right to me.

I think it’s safe to say that I won’t be reading this one though ;)

Points to him for naming a character Alistair!
