I tend to read acknowledgements in addition to all the others. Or at least skim them. It’s fun to see if there are people I know in there.

*Is a happy camper every year, so far…*

(Just the same, it never ceases to amaze me at the sheer volume of pages some people are capable of devouring in an afternoon!)

Me too. I came in last place in the first Read-a-Thon. :-D

I’m personally a Holmes fan. I got to Father Brown afterwards and thought he didn’t hold a candle to Holmes. Don’t know why, but I just enjoyed Arthur Conan Doyle’s mysteries better.

In a previous Read-a-Thon, we ruled against counting your own work because that makes it too easy to write something insignificant and read it over and over. For the same reason, I’ll carry that over to this Read-a-Thon.

But reading a peer’s work… Sure! It’s not handwritten, right? So either figure out how many pages it is when printed, or check in your word processor for how many pages it is at… Let’s say 12-point, single-spaced. That work for you?
By the way, let me make a little note:
I understand the push to read a lot. But as I end up pointing out every year, this isn’t just about reading the most. We purposely made it possible for anybody, regardless of reading speed, to have a chance to win a prize. If you end up reading during your summer when you might otherwise have not, then you’ve fulfilled the goal of the Read-a-Thon and made me one happy camper. :-)

Audio books take just as much time to listen to as actually reading a book, sometimes longer.  So you’re spending the same amount of time doing it.

The point is not just to read lots of pages, but also to be exposed to literature and books. To understand them. If listening to audio books helps you with that, I’m glad to count them.

They’re books, right? So yes, craft books, sewing books, etc. count.

Jesus_girl2016, do you still have the books so you can get the page numbers?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. 162 pages.
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator by Roald Dahl. 162 pages.
(Yeah, yeah, really at my reading level. :-D I’m planning to read some Sherlock Holmes or something soon. )
Running total: 700 pages on the dot.

In my understanding, Focus on the Family Radio Theatre is a dramatization, not a reading. So that could get a little iffy. Somewhat (though not entirely) akin to watching the movie and saying you read the book. :-) I’m unfortunately not familiar enough with Focus on the Family Radio Theatre to make an accurate judgement for a minute-to-page ratio, and I’d think the ratio would change for each show. So based on that information, I’m going to say that dramatizations do not count.

Audio books, however, are fine. You can convert them to page counts by going to Amazon and getting the page count for the physical book.  You should make sure the book matches… It’d be bad if you listened to the abridged version and then counted pages for the unabridged version. (Same applies to the other way ’round)
@Everybody asking questions about what counts… Thanks a bunch for helping us refine the rules! We’ll incorporate some of these clarifications into the rules page for the next Read-a-Thon and hopefully make things less confusing. :-)

Does that mean you have a bunch of unused points lying about? Sadness.

    Yup. :'(

Meet the Austins by Madeleine L’Engle. 191 pages.

I always enjoy my ventures into reading L’Engle, though I always have issues with her theology. Ah well, I guess it’s a matter of ignoring some things…

    Running total: 376 pages.

Sure, an encyclopedia counts if you end up reading at least an entire page…

BookMooch-wise, that was why you had to list ten, to get enough points to mooch something… But I listed my ten, and in the fifteen minutes I spent looking for something to mooch, I had three or four mooched. They go fast. And I’ve never been able to get to anything on my BookMooch wishlist before somebody else snaps it up, either. :-(

    Yes, that is fine.

(This is perfectly fine… Just send any addresses through PM.)

I did BookMooch for awhile. It was somewhat scary to start with, though. You have to post at least ten books when you register, so I did, and I think half of them got snapped up before I had a chance to breath or even see if there was anything I wanted to mooch. So be aware of that…
That said, BookMooch is pretty fun, though you won’t be able to do any knit-exchanges there. :-)
