MemberI just finished it, and frankly, I was disappointed. I’m not sure if it was just my mood, as I was really tired when I read most of it. It seemed to move sorta slow, and everyone seemed to repeat the same things over and over again. He didn’t manage to really surprise me with anything, though I suppose that’s the result of too much thinking on my part. Also, LB is really bad with writing dialogue, particularly love scenes.
However, Rulalin pleased me greatly. I was so happy with the way LB did him, and other’s reactions. LB also achieved his purpose in writing these books: he did manage to make me long for the time of restoration and renewal.
All in all, it wraps up the series satisfactorily, and if I had been in a better mood reading it, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Oh well.

MemberI finished!!! It was very good, Ms. Paul wraps things up pretty nicely. For anyone who’s read the book, here’s my thought’s in white. Highlight to read.
I figured out Kale was pregnant the second time she felt sick. I was so excited!!!! The whole mystery with Toopka was slightly odd. It’s hard to imagine that all this time, she has really been grown-up. Dar’s not really in love with her, is he? I’m so glad Bardon has that ointment to help with the stakes. I felt so bad when he was in pain. I’m glad we saw alot of old characters in this book. It was nice to have Regidor around, even if that meant we had to have Gilda too. I nearly had a fit every time she insulted everyone like manners didn’t matter. I was ready to kill her after she insulted Gymn when he had just healed her! I’m happy she lived and reformed, especially for Regidor’s sake. It was nice to see the mysteries of where the dragons and minnekens came form and the strange murals cleared up. Now that you’ve read all my long, rambling thoughts, what did you think?

MemberThat’s sooner that I expected. I thought they might delay it until Christmas. That would be a long wait.

MemberHe looks like a good choice. Let’s hope he can act well.

MemberWe watch pretty much everything in surround sound. I love it! It is a little overwhelming in LotR battle scenes, though.

MemberI do the Beautiful Feet history, which involves reading books, mostly historical fiction, to learn history. Through this, I have discovered so many good books that I might never have read otherwise. I have loved almost every book they have recommended.
I mostly dislike textbooks. There are so much more interesting ways to learn. Fortunately, my mother is not too fond of textbooks either, and she gives me alot of freedom in choosing curriculum. I think the only textbooks I use are the Apologia science ones, and I don’t mind those much.

MemberAnd look at it this way: it might be one of your favorite series, just waiting to be discovered. True, it has some flaws, but could you stand knowing that you passed up an amazing book because you didn’t want to risk trying it? It can’t hurt to attempt it. Jordan is right, Beyond the Summerland is the worst of the series, but if you read that one, the rest are great.

MemberThe classics thread reminded me of a movie that stinks: Around the World in 80 Days (the most recent one). They hardly kept any of the original plot beyonds the basics. Passepartout is not a Chinese guy pretending to be a French valet who is actually trying to get the stolen jade Buddha back to his family in China!!! And there is no evil Oriental lady attempting to kill Phileas Fogg so she can get land from the British Goverment! Besides that, the quality of the movie is terrible.

MemberWhy not, Owan? I just re-read it and enjoyed it alot. I noticed many things I never noticed before, and read descriptions I never really read before. (Oh, so that’s what Dar actually looks like!)

MemberI don’t mind some abridged books that much. For example, I have a friend who isn’t a very good reader, so I doubt she will ever read many wonderful classics (like Dickens, LotR, etc.) It would be a shame though for her to miss out on an amazing story simply because the language and style of the book is too hard. It would be nice if there were good abridged books that kept some of the style and flavor of the original.
That being said, I have never found an abridged book that I personally have enjoyed. Most of them are just written in such boring, awful writing. I wish someone would write some good abridged books if they are going to write them at all.
(I’ll post a rant about revealing back cover descriptions later!)
